1. Car Horns When I first started driving in Egypt, all I could hear in the car were the crazy amounts of car horns. I didn’t understand why cars and motorcycles would beep their horns for no reason, unless I realized it’s actually the people’s favorite musical instrument.
2. Egyptians never say I don't know This could be a serious problem when you ask for directions for example, Egyptians are very friendly and helpful that they will never tell you they don't know, they will instead try to give you the directions they think is correct even if it's the wrong one.
3. Ozomet marakbeyya (the impossible invitation) The impossible invitation, or what Egyptian call in Arabic ‘3ozomet el-marakbeyya’ (Sailor’s invitation) is a strange yet very funny custom in Egypt. Imagine you are a sailor and you are shipping through a river and you are near the river bank. Suddenly, you found your friend standing on the shore and waving at you. You wave at him. You then shout: ‘come in – have some tea with me’ Although you invited him to have some tea with you, you didn’t approach the shore to let him in. Instead, you are on your way through the river. What you did is just verbally inviting him/her without any real intention to do so – it is an ‘impossible’ invitation Well, this is what Egyptians call: ‘Sailors impossible invitation’ – It is a fun trick that many Egyptians use – But it is mostly for fun and never for real – Egyptians are kind and generous people by nature.
4. Sham el-nesiim (smelling the breeze) If you ever visited Egypt during the spring, you most probably heard of "Sham-el-Neseem" which means smelling of the breeze. This is a very important celebration that occurs on the day after the Coptic Christian Easter. In this celebration, many Egyptians spend the day in gardens or by the Nile. The traditional food Egyptians eat during this day is a very salted type of fish (mullet), which Egyptians call "Feseekh". Egyptians usually eat this fish with green onions and colored Eggs.
The weird part is that the smell of this type of fish + the onion are far away from the breeze.
5. Street weddings Who needs to rent a whole wedding hall for having a nice celebration? Why would you invite a limited number of people when you can make your wedding in the street! Yes that's what Egyptians in local areas do, they bring a specific type of clothes and make it in the form of a wedding tent, and horay you have a wedding, cool right ?!
