5 Underrated cities you must visit in Egypt
1. Dahab
They call it “The city of magic and beauty”, Dahab in Arabic means (Gold) a reference perhaps to the color of the sands or to the golden red skies at sunset, I would personally call it the spiritual side of Egypt. The city exists in South Sinai by the Red sea, it is inhabited by Bedouins that are nice and very friendly. Unlike resorts like Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab has remained fairly unspoiled, it has been a hangout for hippies, open-minded people, and a lot of travelers. It is around 8 hours away from Cairo by bus, however, it is worth the visit. It has a lot of sightseeing that are all connected to nature, Dahab or the Red sea in general is most famous for the amount of fish and corals, thus, today it sees lots of visitors looking to enjoy deep-sea diving, freediving, and snorkeling.
2. Siwa
Siwa is a desert oasis close to the Libyan border, a mirage-like place of palm trees and olive groves that suddenly emerge out of the sands. The mud-brick houses are home to around 20,000 Berber inhabitants, with their own distinctive culture as a result of the isolated location of the town. Its salty lakes and hot springs made it a common destination for medical tourism.
3. Nuba
One of the richest cultures in Egypt, Nuba (Nubia) is known as the house of hospitality in Egypt, it exists in the very south of Aswan, right along the border with Sudan.
Nubia consists of many islands in the Nile inhabited by Nubian families. Nubian villages are very special, they have such a cheerful sight for being painted with bright colors.
When you are there you will definitely hear them talking at some point in a very different rhythm, it is their Nubian language, which is taught in homes by parents.
Nubians are huge fans of crocodiles; they raise them and train them to be human-friendly! You will not find a crocodile wandering the streets in Nubia, but you will surely find at least one in a nearby house.
4. Fayoum
One of the oldest towns in Egypt, I would call it a retreat as it is such a calm town with a lot of green areas and that’s a thing you definitely will miss when you are in Cairo. Unlike other cities, it is very close to Cairo around 1.5 hours.
Tunis village is one of the most famous places in Fayoum, the people there are famous for making pottery. Also, one of the main treats of Fayoum is the area that surrounds the town itself, the so-called Valley of Whales or Wadi al-Hitan where hundreds of fossils have been found belonging to early forms of whale, sharks, and crocodiles. Whole whale skeletons can be seen in the sands around Fayoum.
5. The Black and White Desert
Have you ever seen black sand? Maybe yes, what about white sand? Discover the unique white-colored rock formations of the White Desert, the Bedouin-inhabited national park north of Farafra. It is a 2 days 1 night safari tour where you will have the opportunity to live as a Bedouin, eat Bedouin food, camp in the desert, set your own fire and taste the amazing Bedouin tea. You leave probably from Cairo very early in the morning and have a great adventure in the desert and camp there in the white desert for this night and enjoy the morning of the next day then head back to Cairo. If you ever came across Egypt, this place is definitely worth a visit.
