5 Egyptian words of Islamic origins
5 Egyptian words of Islamic origins
1. Insha-Allah
It literally means (God willing). Since Arabs believe that God is in control of everything, they always put him before their eyes in everything they do, so when you say to your Arab friend let’s meet tomorrow he will answer saying “inshallah”.
However, when it comes to Egyptians, they are completely misusing the word, they use “Inshallah” to escape from fixed plans.
Example: let’s say you are planning to meet your Egyptian friend on Sunday, if he says “inshallah we will meet on Sunday” then probably it will not happen, and if you blame him for not making it work he would refer it to God and say sorry but God wasn’t willing!!
2. Masha-Allah
if you were ever in contact with the Arabic culture then you probably heard about the “Evil Eye”, Arabs believe that if you see something nice they have and mention it without saying “Mashallah” you are giving it an Evil Eye which will affect that thing for the future, this thing could be either materialistic like money or having a nice car or even abstract like knowledge or beauty, and here comes the use of “Mashallah”, it is believed to be the shield to protect you from this Evil Eye.
Example: let’s say you met an Arab and saw his new car and said “wow that’s a nice car”, for an Arab that will count as an Evil Eye even if you didn’t intend to say it in that way, so he will automatically say “Mashallah” to protect his car from this Evil Eye which can bring future accidents.
3. Astaghfar-Allah
Arabs use this word when they are annoyed or mad about something, it literally means (I ask God for forgiveness)
Example: In a situation where you annoy me for example, I will say it and by that I mean (I have evil thoughts on my mind and I hope God will forgive me for them and help me control myself not to harm you).
4. Alhamdu-lillah
(The praise is to God) as mentioned above Arabs have a strong belief in God and you could see that very clear in that expression, this one is used in different aspects, the good and the bad. So, you will find Arabs use it when they get a promotion at work or when they lose a son at war.
5. Bism-Allah
That means (In the name of God) and it is used by Arabs before starting things, it could be something small like having a meal or something bigger like defending your bachelor thesis.
